The Christmas Gift for Grandparents That Can't Be Wrapped
Every year we ask what to get the people who already have everything. Maybe we've been asking the wrong question. Not what can we give them, but what have we never asked them.
Every Christmas, it’s the same conversation.
What do you get for Grandma? What does Grandad even want?
They always say the same thing. “Don’t go spending money on me.” “I’ve got everything I need.”
And honestly, they’re probably right.
By a certain point in life, people don’t need more things. More candles. More socks. Another gift that ends up in a drawer.
But I’ve started to think there is something they do want.
They just never ask for it.
The Christmas Grandad Didn’t Expect
When we made our Christmas film, we wanted to tell a story that felt true to so many families we’ve spoken to. It’s the story of a grandad.
His daughter gave him FromBeyond.co for Christmas. He’ll be the first to admit he wasn’t convinced.
“I wasn’t sure about it at first.”
Then lunch was over. The plates were cleared, everyone was full, and the grandkids were sitting around the table with nowhere else to be.
“We logged on together, and each of them asked me five questions.”
Five questions each.
About his childhood. How he met their grandmother. What their parents were like growing up. The things he’s proudest of. The hard times. What he wishes he’d known at their age.
Simple questions. The kind nobody had ever thought to ask him.
“They asked, and I talked. And so many memories came flooding back. Things I hadn’t thought about in years.”
They Had No Idea
Something happens when you ask someone about their life and then really listen.
For Grandad, it was laughter. A lot of it.
“We laughed a lot. And there were a few things that made them gasp. They had no idea.”
That line stays with me.
They had no idea.
These were people who had known him their whole lives. They’d sat at his table every Christmas. And still, there was a whole person in front of them they had never really met.
It’s how I felt the first time I sat with my grandmother and asked about her life. The stories. The jokes. The parts of her I’d never thought to ask about. It’s the reason FromBeyond.co exists.
Some Stories Won’t Arrive for Years
Grandad didn’t stop at the table.
Later, when the house was quiet, he sat down, looked into the camera, and recorded a story for each of his grandchildren.
“When I was happy with them, I chose when each one would be sent and to who. Some of them won’t arrive for years.”
Some of them won’t arrive for years.
Somewhere in the future, on a birthday, a wedding day or just an ordinary afternoon, one of his grandchildren will open a message and hear his voice again.
For his granddaughter, it wasn’t really a gift for Grandad at all.
It was a gift for her.
“There was so much I didn’t know about my Grandad or our family. It was one of the best Christmases we’ve had, we laughed so much.”
And then she said the thing I keep coming back to.
“Now my little sister who is only 5 will always know where she came from.”
Her sister is five. She probably won’t remember that Christmas.
But she’ll have his stories, in his own voice, for the rest of her life.
Five Questions This Christmas
You don’t need anything special to start.
After lunch this year, when everyone is full and no one is in a hurry, ask each grandchild to put five questions to Grandma or Grandad. Then let them talk.
- What was your childhood like, and where did you grow up?
- How did you meet Grandma (or Grandad)?
- What was Mum or Dad like when they were little?
- What was Christmas like when you were a child?
- What are you proudest of in your life?
- What was the hardest time you went through, and how did you get through it?
- What do you wish you’d known when you were my age?
- What’s a story you’ve never told us?
You might be surprised by what comes out.
You might find yourself laughing. You might find yourself gasping.
You might find out there was so much you didn’t know.
And if you’d like to keep their answers, that’s exactly why we built FromBeyond.co. The family asks the questions, or Nex gently asks them instead. Their answers become a script in their own words, and they record a story for each person they love, to arrive whenever they choose. It’s a one-off $99, with no subscription and nothing to download.
The Questions Were the Gift
For some families, Christmas is also a reminder of who is no longer at the table. If that’s you this year, be gentle with yourself.
And if there’s someone you still have the chance to ask, this might be the year to ask them.
Because the best gift isn’t always the one under the tree.
Sometimes it’s the question we finally ask.
Or, as Grandad puts it:
“They asked the questions. Now they’ll always have the answers.”
What will you ask them this Christmas?
